West Virginia American Water Detects No MCHM As Community Delivers On Clean Water Promise
For several weeks earlier this year, 200K – 300K residents in West Virginia were without clean drinking water after an unprecedented spill of MCHM into the community’s water supply. While this story may have fallen out of the news cycle, the impact of this event can still be felt. Now, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel as West Virginia American Water has detected zero MCHM in several samples of water collected.
Another definitive light can be seen with the group WV Clean Water Hub. Originally just a few friends buying bottled water to bring down to their impacted neighbors, this group could now qualify as a major relief organization, having delivered 17,000 gallons of clean drinking water to those in need.
Landmark Decision In California To Regulate Chromium-6 Does Not Go Far Enough
Late last week, the California Department of Public Health submitted its final decision to regulate chromium-6, a cancer causing chemical made famous in the film Erin Brockovich. While this decision may be considered a landmark, it does not go nearly far enough, states Brockovich herself as the new standard is far less than one proposed long ago by the state.
“It’s bittersweet,” Brockovich. “I certainly feel disappointed that they did not set the (maximum contaminant level) closer to the public health goal of .02 parts per billion.”
Also weighing in on this issue is Andria Ventura of the Clean Water Blog, who writes, “This is a disappointing end to the 10 year wait for a limit that was supposed to be established by legislative mandate in 2004. While California is now the only place in the US to regulate hexavalent chromium in drinking water, this standard is 500 times higher than the public health goal of .02 ppb.”
How Will Florida’s Water Crisis Be Solved?

Linda Stewart shares that not one legislative conversation this year was held attempting to solve this crisis. What is making Florida procrastinate on such a critical issue?
