Controversy Brewing Over Fluoride in Water

by wfnblog on April 27, 2010

Kids Drinking Water FountainEven though we constantly hear about potential contaminants in our drinking water, the United States still is fortunate to have one of the cleanest water supplies in the world. While there is definitely need for improvements—such as replacing or repairing our nation’s aging water treatment and sewage systems—we rarely hear of controversies pitting one group against another over the safety of drinking water.

Yet that’s what recently emerged in Portland, Maine. Fox News reported that a restaurant owner in the city is telling his neighbors not to drink the water. Why? Because of fluoride that the city adds to its municipal water.

The restaurant owner, Oliver Outerbridge, claims that fluoride causes cancer and other debilitating diseases. While his claims have been heard, they have been denied by many, according to the Fox News report.

This controversy is vaguely similar to the debate over the impact of other chemicals in drinking water—most notably prescription drugs. Many unused or outdated prescription drugs get flushed down the toilet each day. And as the number of Americans prescribed these drugs increases, so does the likelihood that the remnants of some of them will be found in the nation’s drinking water. At least according to recent reports on this issue.

What does it all mean? Fluoride in the water, remnants of prescription drugs, and an assortment of other potentially harmful contaminants?

It means that in general our drinking water supply is safe. We can add water filters to our household water supplies for added protection. And we must continue to be diligent and pursue new or undiscovered risks to one of our nation’s most significant resources—its water.

We absolutely do have one of the cleanest water supplies in the world, but our water could definitely be cleaner and healthier.

Yonkers,

Your video is awesome, though not as rare and unusual as you might suspect.

Many, many municipal water supplies like yours have serious sediment problems. Some have issues that are not visible to the human eye. In Wanamingo, MN I recently installed a 5 micron sediment filter. The water has always appeared to be crystal clear from the tap, but WOW what a nasty looking filter when I changed it out after four months. It was totally loaded with crap like your filter. Obviously you have a much more serious problem, requiring very frequent cartridge changes, but I was stunned at how nasty my cartridge was. I've been drinking this water for years and never in my wildest dreams imagined there was so much microscopic crap in my water.

I noticed you are using a polypropylene spun cartridge. You might want to consider a reusable cartridge, like a pleated non-cellulose polyester like the one at this link: http://www.waterfilters.net/Liquatec-SPF-25-100… The polyester cartridge is reusable up to 4 times, and can withstand being cleaned. The poly spun you are using can be rinsed on the outside, but is designed to hold the contaminants inside the depth of the media, thus it's not really a reusable cartridge. It also has more pressure loss than a pleated polyester cartridge. Definitely worth considering a change.

Please read the research people, flouride is highly toxic as a man made substance. Its been banned in more than 99% of european countries for decades now and we still have our heads in the sand.

Flouride added to our water comes from three sources. Alu smelting (toxic, we already know), pestesides (toxic) and nuc power plant waste (toxic, toxic) The research clearly indicates that flouride molecules bind to the cell walls and starve the cell until dead. Whats worse is we currently dont have a method to remove flouride from the body so it builds and builds and builds. Even the American Dental Assoc is warning dentists to limit the amount of flouride applications.

And its not just tap water that has added flouride, try bear, soda, soft drinks, juice, dentists, flouride toothpaste and more and more.

Did you also know that infant tooth paste is now coming flouride free and ADA is recomending it. A small tune of flouride tooth paste will kill a mouse, what will it do to you?

Read the EPA and EC report, one of millions of proven studies and we still cant have it taken out of our water supply?
